Re: Model Kit Reviews

I have heard of something a fair while ago called finishing dust. Supposedly you get dry paint of the base coat colour in a lump somehow and let it really set. Then you grind it down to dust and apply it to your lightly wet model - I assume that is for water based which would be matt anyway. I suppose it might work with oil based but you would need a light coat of something for it to stick to.

Like with a diluted whiteglue mixture maybe? I can't quite picture this.

Re: Model Kit Reviews

Yes that might work. The mixture on first and then sprinkle the dust onto it. Pastels would be no good so I think that's why the ground up dry paint is recommended.

I would think the pastels would much up too much, indeed. The white glue route, by the way, I think would be the best option to my way of thinking; dries clear, but while wet, it's a little on the gelatinous side, whick I think would "grab" the powder.

Re: Model Kit Reviews

Could be worth a try and may be a good method for clumps of sand or mud.

I've also mixed baking soda with paint, and globbed that on. Talcum powder could work, too.

Baking soda. I haven't heard of that one before. Any particular reason for it as opposed to other stuff ?

Re: Model Kit Reviews

At the time, the most important reason was that I had it handy!

Re: Model Kit Reviews

Sounds like a good reason. There is a very fine plastic filler I get with my resin as a thing to add which would be good too. It's around $10 for a kilo and mat be good with white glue as a filler too. I will try some and see.

Re: Model Kit Reviews

The oil paint will dry satin...but there must be some 'commercial' matt clear that actually dries matt?! I've been unhappy with both the Dulcote and Humbrol matt clear and man...when I've used that Dulcote...I could physically feel the brain cell attrition. That stuff is toxic!
