You can do umlauts! There was recently a discussion on Feldgrau about that! I don't have german keyboard ( I've got polish one), but I can do them. Look: ü ß ö

If you are using Windows many characters are available in "Character Map" which you can find under Start...Accessories...System Tools. Select the character(s) that you want, hit "Copy" then use the "Paste" function to place where you want it.

Sure you can! I dö it all the time! You use the ALT key, and a four-digit code. The more common ones are:

ALT+0252=ü
ALT+0228=ä
ALT+0246=ö
ALT+0223=ß

Follow Jim's advice for the Character Map file, and you'll find a bunch more. Hell, I can even type Hungarian letters!
