Hello everyone, I'm John Allred and new to the forum. I'm posting more for my father Edwin Allred than myself, he is a WWII vet who served aboard the USS Portland. He is 83 and in good health, he likes to hear from others who were in the same battles at the Portland. He's not good on the PC so I read the emails and posts to him. Some of you may know the Japanese surrendered aboard the Portland the same hour as they did on the Missouri, this was over shadowed by the Missouri event. If you look in the Portland surrender photos you can see my father standing right behind Vice Admiral George D. Murray near the signing table.

Welcome, John! While my attention is more on the European theater, I'd be interested in hearing about your Father's experiences. Few people are still with us who had front row seats to that event!

One thing that showed him the condition of the Japanese, was when the Japanese dignitaries came aboard as they filed by next to him he could see that their uniforms were wrinkled and in disarray. Even General Shunzaburo Mugikura's uniform. He had an assistant with him. Seemed like they had been in trouble, or in hiding.
