Re: Food & Water On The March
![]() The German Model 1931 canteen was issued to the Wehrmacht from 1939 to 1942. This oval, single quart aluminum constructed canteen featured either a machined aluminum or bakelite plastic cap and cup with folding metal handles. The unit was carried in a felt cover buttoned around the canteen and then fastened to a bread bag via a metal D ring. For extra security, a leather strap was run from canteen neck, through a loop on the bread bag and slipped over a press-fit point on the canteen bottom.

This is my WWI Australian field kitchen dinner plate, worn and well used but still useable - I've eaten off my diggers dinner plate!

Re: Food & Water On The March
![]() The standard issue mess kit for the Wehrmacht in 1944-45 was two-piece, either steel or aluminum constructed, and designed to fit tightly together. This way the kit could used to transport food for future consumption. The lower "bail" section was used for soups and the top part as a plate for more solid foods. ![]() Both sections of the kit could be used for cooking or warm ups, as well as the cup from the German canteen. These could be placed on a portable fold out Eisbit ration heater. ![]() As shown in the top of the above photo, when not in use the Eisbit ration heater folded into a compact size for transport. The unit was fueled by tablets, similar to wood pellets.

Re: Food & Water On The March
![]() German Bread Bag M1931 The bread bag M31 was carried by every German landser in World War II. The either field gray or olive drab, water repellent canvas satchel was intended to contain an infantryman's rations and eating utensils, however these large bags often ended up toting everything from matches and field caps to playing cards and goggles. The bread bag was designed to attach to the rear of the cartridge belt by means of two-fold down buttoned loops, or slung on a provided general purpose strap. These straps were used more often however as helmet bands for camouflage.

Re: Food & Water On The March
My dad was issued the metal canteen and cup in Alaska when I was a kid in the early 1960's. The metal canteen cup was still an issue item when I was in the Army in the 1980's.
