Panzer Tunics

Given the large community of scale modelers in the Zone, and the large number of those interested in German armor and figures, I decided to open a thread just for Panzer uniforms and caps.

Here's the first installment:

This is the first pattern Panzer field jacket as worn by a Gefeiter assigned to Panzer-Regiment 3. The shoulder straps have been sewn down to avoid snagging and the original metal numeral 3 picked out of each strap for the same reason.

There is a lack of lapel button holes and the metal hook and eye arrangement is intended for closing the jacket up.

The piping is in artificial silk.

The second pattern Panzer field jacket is one as worn by a Obergefreiter in the 4th Panzer-Regiment 11. Most obvious change is the wider lapels and absence of the hook and eye combination.

On this version the numeral 11 is chain stitched on the shoulder tabs, and all piping is in dyed wool.

The third variation of the Panzer field jacket is that of a Hauptfeldwebel. Both the button and eye/hook feature are missing and the collar lapels are a bit wider.

The piping remains wool.

Re: Panzer Tunics

Interesting that that Haupt wears his Haupt stripes on both sleeves of his "wrap". That is an oddity.

I thought so when I saw it. You'll also note his IC 2nd class ribbon is not attached in same manner as others. This could have been a tailored field jacket ala Patton, although I did not think that would have been permitted in the Wehrmacht.

A field jacket of the Sturmartillerie as worn by a Kanonier in the Sturaritterie Brigade 229. The national eagle is the 1944 pattern. Also on interest here is the use of the bright red soutache (denotes artillery) and the Einheitslitzen on the collar, common in late war field jackets.

Above is the first pattern Panzer field jacket in a reed green herringbone twill material. This example was worn by a crewman in the Sturmartillerie or Panzerartillerie. Although this design was slated to be replaced in 1942, this jacket dates to 1945 with a 1944 national eagle.

Note the single row of black plastic buttons on the right side,

Actually you'd be surprised just like the US military the Wehrmacht allowed tailored items as well. You only see it in those ranks that could really afford it but they existed. Just like most cap cockade and eagles were made by the BeVo manufacturer some Soldaten just went out and bought an embroidered one from a embroider in Germany.

I did know about the higher ranks and aristocratic officers, especially in the Luftwaffe, but not about the embroidered patches among soldaten.

Re: Panzer Tunics

The first Panzer denim jacket in mouse gray cotton.

This particular jacket belong to a Hauptmann awarded the Close Combat Badge as well as Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class, and these decorations suggest he was attached to the Panzeraufklarer unit.

On this jacket a second button was added to the final closure below the national eagle.

The second pattern Panzer denim jacket in reed-green herringbone twill material. This jacket is thought to have been wore by a Panzer grenadier Unteroffizer who did not make to switch to meadow green.

The collar tabs are Einheitslitzen on field grey piped in white and the national eagle mouse gray on field gray.

Note the double row of pressed fiber buttons on the right side.

Re: Panzer Tunics

This second pattern Panzer jacket was was produced in mouse gray material, but has age faded to a light beige color. It features the standard mouse gray on gray green national eagle and black Totenkopf collar tabs piped in rose pink.

Although not a special purpose Panzer jacket, this M41 tunic and billed field cap was a favorite choice for Panzer crews who turned in their black uniforms for a type more suitable for wear in the Western Desert. This example was for a Panzer Feldwebel.
