Klaus, both from personal opinion, and from a factual basis, I'm going to disagree with that statement.

I can't recall the exact figure off the top of my head, but it's a ridiculous amount. Especially considering that he's going to be supported by the taxpayers in a better condition than he quite possibly would on the street, all because he was convicted of a heinous crime!
The taxpayers become responsible for feeding and clothing him, paying for "babysitters" (like me!), and picking up any medical costs. Why?

Putting someone on death row isn't expensive. What's expensive is the bills for a string of lawyers to file appeal after spurious appeal, to save the life of a murderer/rapist/pedophile/serial killer/cop killer/all of the above!

Personally, I resent the hell out of any of my money having to pay to support scum like that. Hell, buy the ammo, and I'll shoot 'em for free, and so would a lot of other people!

Re: Do you think?

Hmmm... I thought I once saw a figure that claimed it was cheaper to have him imprisoned for live. But perhaps the figure was wrong or I remember it the wrong way.

Of course it would be cheaper if there was only a shooting squad.

So: Is it cheaper or not? Including lawyers and that sort of crap?

Re: Do you think?

It's the legal bills that raise the cost in the US, not the cost of the execution itself. Including legal bills to the taxpayers, it is more expensive to execute a criminal.

Re: Do you think?

So, listen to Shakespeare! Kill all the lawyers! Wait, that might not work.

At least get them out of the loop. Any conviction deserves an appeal, IF there might have been some miscarriage of justice. If the appeal is denied, carry out the sentence. End of story. No more taxpayer dollars wasted on keeping a criminal healthy until he expires on his own.

Re: Do you think?

So de facto it is more expensive.

Put them into jail for live or get rid of the legal bills.

Re: Do you think?

"On that you are preaching to the choir." What does that mean? That nobody is listening/ has the same opinion?

Sorry for interrupting but I liked that sentence.

No problem. Has the same opinion is a pretty accurate meaning for the idiom.

What is your opinion?
You can "justifiy" anything you want. You can pass laws and encourage postions that put anyone you so desire into a postion where you can "justify" their destruction or their beatification.

Would this be nessesary to what? What are you trying to accomplish? To prove that "you" were "right" and "they" were "wrong" and then give it a veneer of legality? A generation later it will be villified, and a generation after that it can be praised again.

Put them in prison if you want them there. Create situations where it will be practically inevitable if you want to put octegenarians behind bars.

Excecute them if you want them dead. What harm they can do you now is a mystery.

Where's the discussion? Any victor can do what it wants. That's one of the advantages of victory.
