Re: LEE-GRANT:-The M3 Medium Tank
Part of the reason for the Sherman's poor performance on hills and in mud (as the Russians so loudly complained) was that the tracks were narrow. This of course was because fitting into cargo ships for trans-oceanic voyages was incorporated into the design.

Re: LEE-GRANT:-The M3 Medium Tank
Britain received the first batch soon after the fall of Tobruk. They went to Africa. The first tanks arrived with NO engines. I can not remember if the ship was sunk or re-routed somewhere else.

Re: LEE-GRANT:-The M3 Medium Tank
That's the way to start an offensive. Tanks with no engines. What did they do with them? Pushed them to the front?

Re: LEE-GRANT:-The M3 Medium Tank
If I remember correctly, there was another ship sent in convoy with the new engines....something like that anyways.

Re: LEE-GRANT:-The M3 Medium Tank
Was this standard to ship the engines seperatly from the rest of the tank?
Why weren't they assembled before shipping?

Re: LEE-GRANT:-The M3 Medium Tank
You know, I thought that too.....I only read this. Will have to read up on this point to clarify it.
Churchill was with Rosevelt in confrence when Tobruk fell. Rosevelt asked "What can I do to help" and off the tanks went.

Re: LEE-GRANT:-The M3 Medium Tank
Tobruk fell at the end of June 1942. The Grants were certainly active before this-Participating at Gazala in May.
