Re: Name That Weapon

Good guess Lt!

It was called an SD bomb, although I have no clue what SD stands for, and it came in two models SD1 and SD2. I found the photograph in "Operation Barbarossa in Photographs".

This German device from 1942 might have been the forerunner of the modern cluster bomb.

It was a shell, possibly made of wood, packed with either 180 or 360, one or two kilogram bombs. It was designed to be dropped over massed Soviet artillery or anti-tank gun positions and open a few meters above the ground.

Re: Name That Weapon

SD sounds wrong to me as that was framgmentation bombs!

Here's a good list of various German bombs:

Re: Name That Weapon

Great link!

So the SD reference was to the type of bombs placed inside the canister.

Fragmentation might have been right. The Germans on the Eastern Front prized captured Soviet AT guns, so being able to take out the crews but save some of the guns may have been their intent.

Revelli OVP. It's a Revelli Vilar-Perosa M1915 that's been cut in half n' had a stock attacced n' the result became the shortlived Revelli Officina Vilar-Perosa.
