To McCoy He definatly said Lewis acutally if I had the choice of any machine gun I would have wanted a vehicle mounted 50cal M2 or The S A W

I don't doubt that he said Lewis but what I'm after is that he could have mixed 'em up 'cos not all know guns in n' out.

If you by SAW mean the Fabrique Nationale MINIMI I'd say that it's a poor choice due to a lesser effective range n' penetration caused by the lighter .223 NATO round but please keep this to weaponry that was available durin' WWII n' not modern weapons please. The M2 have the range allright n' it also overpenetrates. A big advantage with the M2 though is that you can use different kind of rounds in it such as AP, Incinderary, explosive n' so on. But to move down human waves its better with a watercooled machinegun that is able to substain the fire.

Hey McCoy, what do you mean by 'over penetrates'?

Re: Okay I have this friend he says he 'd rahter get stuck with a Lewis than a MG42

It's a caliber that's unsuited for use at soft targets such as cannon fodder as it just goes through without as much trouble whilst a smaller round leaves more energy in the target but all of the rounds mentioned in this thread overpenetrates 'cos they're quite powerful all of 'em with the exception of .223 that just leaves a small hole unless it hits a bone.

But hey, if you can line the enemy up so each bullet takes out five of 'em then it's good...

Re: Okay I have this friend he says he 'd rahter get stuck with a Lewis than a MG42

Sorry McCoy I'll stick to WWII from now on any ways This guy knows guns in and out he owns a Lewis. This guys been my friend for all of my life I know what he knows he's told me this on several ocations with different choices. Like one time it was a M1910 Maxim and a Lewis and he still said Lewis I would have chosen the M1910 I really don't know why he would choose the Lewis over the Maxim ecept because of the lower rate of fire but it's only lower by 50 rounds.

I wonder if he's thought out what to do after he's put 20 magazines through it in quick order?

Re: Okay I have this friend he says he 'd rahter get stuck with a Lewis than a MG42

It's not just the matter of ammo but more to the point that the Lewis is useless after that amount of fire in a short time while you just change the barrel on an MG42 n' continue. But on the other hand, with a Vickers you just keep on firin' even after you've used up yer last reserve barrel to the MG42...
