The Stalin Note

In 1952 there was a propose for German reunification by the Soviets, almost four decades before the actuall reunification would happend.

The propose was that both Germanies would be united as one state that would be neutral in the cold war (something in the line of Austria).

There was another proposal to restore a united Germany to it's 1937 borders if it's will join the Warsaw Alliance.

Of course it's might be just a trick by the Soviets to try and damage W. Germany alliance with the west, however I believe the Soviets could gain much from German unification:

1. There would assure that in the event of a war the German resources would be use by the west in the event of a war.

2. As it was the early 50es, most of the hardcore Wehrmacht/Waffen SS and most of Germany's generals veterans lived in W. Germany, of coure most of them as it's only was a couple of years since the war were qualify for military service, so no doubt in a future comfilct there could be a dreaded force.

And on the contrary all that the Soviets need to give up was E. Germany with it's small population and it's limited resources.

Re: The Stalin Note

Do you have more of some at least "remotely substantial" facts and sources?
I read, or rather heard, about Beria proposals after Stalin's death.
Is this connected in any way with what you're saying?

Restoration of German borders to 1937 lines in 1950's is fascinating...
Bring more facts if you have them.

Very interesting topic!

Cheers mate,

Not exactly. There would also be the issue of Königsberg aka Kaliningrad and that portion of northern East Prussia which had been annexed as part of RSFSR.

The idea of further forced migrations of civilians and the re-creation of the Polish Corridor" would have set up the same situation as what provoked World War II in the fist place.

And what of Danzig/Gdańsk? And what of Poland's borders? Was USSR going to compensate them with some or all of the territory they took in 1939 thus resulting in further forced migrations? Or was this to be the fifth partition of Poland?

Re: The Stalin Note

No one is debating that there are stories of such a note, but where is something suggesting 1937 borders?

Re: The Stalin Note

I had not heard of the 'Stalin letter' before this. It seems kind of hard to beleive he would have even entertained the thought after FDR gave him the go ahead for all of eastern Europe at potsdam and Yalta. Poland was sold down the river as well as Europe in general.

What it's got to do to FDR, Postdam or Poland? if it was sincere it's was just a tactical manuever, give up the DDR so the west would give up the BRD and thus make the USSR stronger in the balance of power.

It has everything to do with Poland if 1937 borders were discussed.

Re: The Stalin Note

If FDR had not given all of eastern Europe away(at potsdam, yalta) in the first place, then there most likely wouldn't have been a Stalin letter.

FDR didn't give anything for the simple fact it's impossible to give away something that you didn't have, the Soviet army rule eastern Europe, so infact FDR onlt recongise reallity.
