My Uncle

My grandfather's brother was a POW in the Pacific Theater. Though I do not know to much on the topic I know he was at Osaka POW camp and he was involved in the Bataan Death March. He was located at Osaka Main Camp Chikko Osaka 34-135. His name was Andrew. Of course the picture that follows this was taken when he arrived at camp because when he was liberated his was nothing but bones. My grandfather's other brother actually went in with the Chinese guerilla's and trained them and went into Occupied China in hopes that he would be able to help his brother out and there is a story to that too but this isn't his thread. Anyway he never really spoke much about his time there which is understandable. I never knew the man personally I am getting all the stories I have got from my grandfather and grandmother. I have heard of how when he was on the Bataan March he along with another man was helping someone along the way and they dropped him from just the sheer pain of having to carry another person after not being properly fed and taken care of and when they turned around to help him up he was just killed by a Japanese soldier. Also I was told of how the man in front of him when they were marching a Japanese soldier took his sword and sliced from the shoulders down to the buttocks open and well I never heard more to that but I guess it is safe to assume that person didn't make it. I was also told of how they would eat grass, and whatever small insects they could find to stay alive and give them a little bit of energy to keep going. Ultimately he was liberated and brought home. I don't really know much more on him than what I just said. All I know is to this day my grandfather still hates the Japanese for what they did to his brother. Below is the picture taken of him when he entered the camp.

Re: My Uncle

My best guess would be they took them of all their prisoners when they came in and were in better shape to maybe send home or something later on down the road in an effort to say they took great care of their POW's. I would assume a Japanese soldier or maybe photographer took it.
