Escaped Prisoner Records?

Does anyone know if the Germans ever kept any sort of Escaped prisoner (or even attempted escape) records? I ask this because the unit that I am studying had the inconvenience of landing smack on their DZ on D-Day and had almost a dozen men captured. Of these men at least four of them escaped, and three others that I know of tried to escape (one of them twice) but were captured. I only know how three of the four escaped and was wondering if there would be any records related to the fourth.

Matt

PS if anyone wants to know more about these men just let me know and I'll open a thread in the ETO section.

Re: Escaped Prisoner Records?

The archives has records on POW's but a search for "escaped" came up blank. Searching for "escape" led to multiple records or prisoners who were "Executed, Died in Ship's Sinking or Result of Ship Sinking, Shot While Attempting Escape". See NARA - AAD - List of Series - Wars/ International Relations: World War II for a link to the POW database.

Given the Nazi's penchant for record keeping, the information is likely somewhere, though where I am not certain.

I'm interested in the info that you have. Go ahead and post it.

Re: Escaped Prisoner Records?

Thanks Jim,

That is the same place that I was able to get base info form most of them from. I don't see one for those shot while trying to escape just the one with basic info on their capture (although a lot of them were wrong) . For example one of the men in the unit that was captured on D-Day, Lambert Tucker, has his location of capture as Germany but he was definitely in France. He was one of the Three who attempted to escape. He and the more famous Joseph Beyrle (my avatar) and Capt. Robert Harwick H/506 dropped out of line of the German column and tried to make a run for it. Joe was shot in the butt and told the others to leave him. Tucker was recaptured soon there after but Harwick made it back to friendly lines. On both Tucker and Beyrle's records the source is an official account (Harwick). I will continue the stories in another thread.

Matt
