Re: What we are fighting for?
I have not fallen into any trap. I made my own mind up. If any religion ruled anywhere, if they had enough support they would bring in their own laws. That would discriminate against others. Using the grounds of the sacridity of religious opinion and that god told me to do it. And its for "their" benefit in the long run. I do not trust organised religions of any sort the only reason they do not impose it on us is there are more non believers than there are believers "thank god" and forgive the pun. If people in India do bad things to people then in my view they are just as wrong. If people in Europe did bad things to people because of religion then they were wrong. Trying to diminish plus justify or excuse what others do because of what Europeans did is also wrong in my view. I control my urges I do not need a god to do good or to stop me from doing bad things to nice people. I trust myself to do that because I have enough love in my life

Re: What we are fighting for?
Ah but you all miss the real point, without Religion there would be far fewer wars. We would have to think of another reason to annihilate each other. The large defence companies would be out of work and some of us would have to turn to alternative employment :P
Until we develop the ability for space fairing, terra-forming etc, humanity needs war to limit the global population and the burden that we put on this planet. There is no Star Trek utopia I'm afraid, so until the whole world can get together as one and colonise the stars we will continue to fight each other and religion is as good an excuse as any other. Anyway that's just my cynical outlook, I'm agnostic myself (hedging my bets, if god is all forgiving I'll be ok in the end )

Re: What we are fighting for?
That is an excellent summation Bob. One of the best I have seen. Raw lust for power at the expense of others is indeed one of the worst traits we can develop. It consumes rational thought and makes anything justified no matter how twisted. Many have a go at religion for ills but look at the damage and suffering caused by corporations who answer only to a share price.
