YOU want a RANT....

Alright here goes....
I tell you what really Pisses Me Off. When everyone, news, forums, Web sites all go nuts that an ENTERTAINER , Steve Irwin is tragically killed. YET, no one mentions the deaths of 20 Allied Soldiers in Afghanistan.
Though Steve Irwins untimely death is tragic and sad for his family, please remember that there are 20 other families grieving now.
This does not incl all the wounded or all the US and coalition troops in Iraq.

We, as a society, have become desensitised to military casualties yet go "ape" over 1 entertainer.

As was mentioned in another forum....."He was known to millions" and about the military deaths....."no one cares" (I have taken this one quote out of context)

I for one do care for all the deaths, but will not forget who is doing something for their country, while one is only entertaining.

It's hard to argue with what you say, though I am an avid herpetoculturist and visit a number of reptile sites. The general feeling is that he did a lot for our community by educating the public and through conservation. So I would argue that he was more than "only entertaining". That doesn't make anything else that you said any less valid. I'm just making a point.

Point taken.....however, the main gripe is he is still just talking about animals and yet the soldiers are fighting bad guys....no matter what political agenda you follow, the soldier does not ask to be there, but he goes when his/her gov't sends them and then the soldiers country briefly mentions his passing and yet we all still talking about 1 TV personality weeks later.

Let me put it to you this way.....1 of the CDNs killed was an Olympian athlete. How many knew that?

Re: YOU want a RANT....

I had a similar incident a few years ago. Right about the time Dale Earnhart was killed, a chopper full of Marines went down. Body count there was about23, but that only got a blip in the news. Granted, NASCAR is almost a religion down in North Carolina, but it was damned near a state day of mourning for him.

Another officer and I almost got into a fight when he said that those Marines enlisted, they were there by choice. It took a lot of restraint.

I fear that the biggest problem is that the public is getting accustomed to hearing a body count on the daily news. It only becomes important if one of those bodies was someone you knew. With Steve Irwin, although most people who knew of him expected him to be killed in the field, it was still a fluke how he actually died. It was unexpected. If Sergeant Kevin Houlihan of the Massachusetts National Guard is killed next week, what is that name going to mean to anyone other than my family? Not a whole helluva lot. Sad, but true.

There's an old saying that nobody appreciates a soldier until the wolf is at the door. I fear it's a reality that soldiers have dealt with since long before there was a United States, United Kingdom, or most of the countries we know today. Human nature is a bitch.

Re: YOU want a RANT....

Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians. Herpetoculture is keeping and breeding them.

I live in a community with a large concentration of military bases and have friends in various branches. Here's the difference. People in the military provide security so that we can maintain our way of life. As long as they do their jobs properly we don't see them, and we don't want to know the details of what they do and how they do it. War has become sanitized in the media with smart bombs, unmanned drones, and cruise missiles. People who are actors, entertainers, athletes, etc, are seen in a different light and affect choices that we make more directly and on a day to day basis.

Now when it's an athlete and a soldier, like Wikipedia reference-linkPat Tillman, that makes news here in the US. Especially when, as it turns out, he was killed by friendly fire.

His show was interesting, entertaining, and informative. My oldest used to love watching it. Then again, so did my wife and I!

Re: YOU want a RANT....

Yes, I doubt if anyone ever replace him...

Tomorrow I will send you some reactions from Australia...

Sleep well Steve...

I can understand sniper1shot point...

Life is life. But some people choice is to be quiet achievers in a shadows. They don't want to go through pressure of being celebrity - no matter how much money it brings. Often they die on the field as model soldiers, sons, brothers, husbands...

Steve was also a model son, husband... He - or rather fate - (someone may call it Providence), choose for him different, more public profession.

He was one of not that many, which in a faded khaki shorts and shirt could mesmerise world audience. Without computer tricks and gimmicks.
Steve was real - and that's way, so many people will remember him.

His movies will be watched for years and years...

If soldier die in the field, no matter - grunt or rank, not much changes, beside his family grief.
The World stays the same...

P.S.

When Operation "Iraqui Freedom" started, Channel 7 in Australia every night was showing pics of guys which paid supreme sacrifice...

BUT OUT OF PRIME TIME!!!! 5.00 PM - everyone in the car going home!
8.30 pm they were showing some explosion blasts and cats which climbed on the trees...

How to put pressure on politicians to make them force TV to make 15 seconds clip, with faces and names of blokes KIA in current war. Such clip could be repeated two or three times every evening.
Even if they cannot force TVs to give away money....
Well, taxpayers can demand that money will be spend as majority of them wish...

Perhaps I'm asking too much... But these blokes which died for us...
They deserve it....

Similar here. But casualties were few in the "war" and have been many since "mission accomplished". Here in the US we have political talk shows on television on Sunday mornings. In one, the show has a regular feature called "In Memoriam" where a list of names released by the Pentagon (and sometimes some photos) of those KIA are given.

As for the airwaves, those are public property and used by commercial license. The government here can put anything they want into those licenses. But Im not sure that any US administration wants to publicize its military losses that way. Honoring the dead is one thing. Political suicide is another.

In Memoriam
