I Hate Concrete...

My father's girlfriend decided that the sidewal infront of their house needed to go because it... well I haven't really gotten that far into the conversation with her. I was told to get rid fo the sidewalk...period.
I was excited until I found out that this stuff isn't too old to just break up, and not new enough that is hasn't cured all the way... its right in the middle, rock solid. Isn't usual sidewalk supposed to be like 3 or 4 inches? This damn thing is 6!!! I'll see ya guys after my back stops hurting from this crap.

But I'm still having fun breaking stuff

Sounds like you need to rent an air hammer. As a laborer, I spent many a day with a jackhammer removing broken sidewalk the concrete trucks had smashed. As you'll find out, the hard part isn't breaking it up, it's hauling it away.

I agree. The jackhammering is fun. The lifting is back breaking.

Re: I Hate Concrete...

Rent the Bosch breaker from Home Depot for small jobs like yours.

I had a crew out here removing a couple of hundred square feet of it recently. 8 inces thick. The big ingersol Rand jack hammers were going all day for two straight days (the noise was unbelieveable) and then it took 2 days to haul away.

Fortunately all I had to do was give ocassional instructions and keep everyone supplied with cold water

Or Trev could get a masonry drill, bore some deep holes in the concrete and set off a few big firecrackers down inside the holes and blow the concrete to bits.

It may be dangerous or even illegal, but it would more fun than breaking it up with a jack-hammer I bet.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: I Hate Concrete...

Actually it wasn't that bad. I got rid of about 95% of it all in about 3 hours... and yes, I was tired as hell. The next day a 4 foot wide, 4 foot deep hole was dug so some tar membrane and plastic was put onto the oundation of the house. The concrete was set at an angle towards the house so when it rained water was leaking through the basement. Its all done now...thank God!
