BRAVO ZULU

"I consider myself a man." Never a better statement spoke, if all peoples would stop labelling themselves and others then I believe more peace and harmony would exist!! I love to fill forms, which ask "background" information out with just "human".

I've seen the horrors just a label have wrought.

Yet I care so much whether a Panzer is an Ausf C or D. Any Shrinks care to take that on!!!????

BTW I'm not OFFENDED either, these issues need discussion if change is to continue.Think about having this discussion 50 years ago and you can see how far we have come and conversely how far we still have to go.

Salutations All

Like the British did to us during their nuclear testing, we had no protective clothing while the British protected their own.

Re: With "friends" like this, who needs "enemies".

I'm not sure the brits present had on anything that different to the aussies?

IIRC, I remember reading somewhere that the brits that were there also suffered for it later like the australian troops that were there did.

Remember we are talking about the "Duck & Cover" days when people actually believed doing that would help save them in an atomic blast.
They knew about the Thermal radiation dangers but their knowledge of Ionizing radiation was limited.

Besides the posts in this thread show that even our modern democratic governments don't care if their soldiers die as long as the served their purpose and believe the end really does justify the means.

The parts that get me are for one, why did we australians let the british test their atomic weapons on our soil at all?
I'm sure if Australia asked Britain to allow Australia to test/detonate a few nuclear weapons somewhere on the British Isles, I know what the answer would be.

The other is what did Australia actually gain by allowing the british atomic tests on its soil?
I can answer that question, Australia didn't get anything out of it except broken promises that were made by the British Govt. - We got screwed over bigtime.

Actually I'm mistaken, we did get someting else out of them.
Atomic Death Zones

How awesome is that?

Cheers,
Dave

Agreed. I would have preferred the song to deal with the Polynesian take over of the Pacific Islands. Of course the line about guns, would have to be changed.

Re: With "friends" like this, who needs "enemies".

There was a great doco (Four Corners I think) about the nuclear testing at Maralinga and the rocket range that used to be on Cape York too.
Remember Menzies was the PM at the time and he would have cut off his ears if the Queen requested it of him. There was also the hope (according to the doco) that the Brits would share the nuclear technology with Australia if we provided the testing ground. Of course they never did.
Years after the tseting ended, there were still scientists at the site testing soil samples to get a better idea of the decay. They took their samples from designated areas, returned them to their lab and took readings. One guy decided to test outside the designated area one day and found thousands of tiny, spherical 'rocks'. When he returned some to the lab, their radioactivity registered off the scale of their geiger counters. The sample had to be placed on a stool outside the building (about 30 feet) to register within the scope of their available equipment. I believe this occurred around 1958-59. The samples turned out to be Cobalt 16. An incredibly unstable isotope produced by the detonations. In short, nobody is going to be using that land for anything any time soon. Thanks Bob!
Peace.

THE US military planned to test deadly nerve gas on Australian soldiers in far north Queensland during the Cold War, declassified documents reveal.

The Defence and Prime Minister's office files show that the US was strongly pushing then prime minister Harold Holt's government in the 1960s to allow tests of two of the deadliest chemical weapons ever developed -- VX and GB, better known as Sarin nerve gas.

The revelation airs this morning on the Nine Network's Sunday program.

It says the top secret plan involved allowing 200 mainly Australian combat troops to be aerially bombed and sprayed with the chemical weapons.

It's understood the Iron Range rainforest near Lockhart River in far north Queensland was the likely location for the tests.

Peter Bailey, a former senior official with Mr Holt, tells the program the request caused consternation in Canberra, and as far as he knows the tests never went ahead.

But he says planning was very advanced in the US, which wanted the operation to be kept secret because the weapons were illegal under international law.

Nice way for the US Government to treat a friendly nation and its Ally hey?
