Lightbulb Georgia vs Russia conflict, thoughts please..?

I'm sure a lot of you Zoners have heard about this, at least something, I myself have no clue in this area over there, but how about others here?

As of right now Georgia is losing and pulling back with Russian forces going beyond the disputed territory and going onto Georgian "regular" soil, not good regardless who started this. I have seen many things on the net, so nothing really surprises me on this, but good hard info is a plus.

Cheers, and as always, please keep it "clean" here, The Zone has kindly let me post on this topic, so a good discussion is what I'm looking for, if one has to disagree, then do so in The Zone way please, is all I and others ask here.

Thanks

Tom

Not much to seriously say. I'm a bit lost to a few of the items surrounding whats going on. I do think this foreshadows something.

But for sure... Life imitates art:

Ghost Recon

Ghost Recon begins in April 16, 2008, with civil unrest in Russia. Ultra-nationalists have seized power in Moscow, with plans to rebuild the Iron Curtain. Their first step is clandestine support of rebel factions in Georgia and the Baltic States. This storyline foreshadows the 2008 South Ossetia War. This is where the Ghosts come in: to silence the rebellion. Armed with some of the most advanced weaponry in the world, the soldiers of the Ghost Recon force are covertly inserted into Eastern Europe and given specific missions to curtail the rebel actions and overthrow their benefactors.

I'm not sure whats happening either, ya can't even rely on the gov telling us the truth about what WE are up to, much less tell us the truth about what the Russians are doing. Seems a lot of civilians have been killed, let's hope this ends, like now or sooner

Thanks, Georgia did start the actual combat, offensive anyways in that disputed land, but Russia did'nt have to go a bit over board on their response there, they are in way past that region in dispute now.
No surprise that the Geirgian Army and navy took a beating so far, from others who served with them in Iraq, they were nit the best except their commando's, or so I've been told.
That being a "puppet" (as has been quoted in Russian reports) state for the US idea gets no play with me regardless, I do wonder though if there were some US advisers there in that mess. I did like the Bush speech of get out now and sign the cease fire proposal today for the Russians, we will see what happens.

Cheers, thanks again for the replies gentlemen.

Tom

Let this non-war end on a good note, if there is one as soon as possible for all sides involved.

Georgia did not start the actual combat. The combat was started by separatists who started attacks in Georgia proper. It is suspected that the attacks were encouraged and perhaps even ordered by Moscow. The Georgians went in to break up the bases of operations and possibly fell into a trap. The Russian response was too organized and rapid to show anything other than extensive preplanning and advanced predeployment. The attacks and push into Georgia proper further weakens the Russian "peacekeeping" excuse. Russian wants it's Sudetanland back and after that will come the rest of Czechoslavakia (Georgia). If Russia gets it's way, perhaps Ukraine will be next on their list kind of like their version of 1939 Poland. That is my opinion from what I have seen and read and nothing more.

Re: Georgia vs Russia conflict, thoughts please..?

The massed Russian Forces on the border prior to the conflict, reminds me of the Mexican-US war. Huh? War comming? Jeez, we didn't know.

My opinion, this is a move by Putin (yeah I know but...) to re-establish the Russian military prowess both to impress his possible admirers (and nationals) and to deter any offer of NATO membership to the southern provinces.

I believe this is going to be another "psst ant" conflict we were so used to during the Cold War. The difference with the modern world is petroleum. The area has a major pipe-line for the area. If Russia gains control, (through a puppet gov.) they can threaten many of their old republics. Give me 3 weeks, and I can be a genius on this. Hindsight etc.

And here we have what I think is the closest version of what it's about. Seems like the timing is no coincidence either with the world more interested in the Olympics.
As I understand it, Georgia itself has been pro-Moscow except for South Ossetia and Abkhazia which are the two provinces where things kicked off. It seems a little odd to me that a country the size of my back yard would knowingly start a war with Russia...what hope would they have?
Peace.

No, its the other way round, Georgia is pro western and the two disputed regions are pro Russia with a majority Russian population. Anybody know where North Ossetia is?

Georgia tried to join Nato but was rejected otherwise the EU and US/Canada would now be at war with Russia, something they managed to avoid for 60 years, makes you think eh?

I'm not sure how controlling the oil pipe line would bring other former soviet provinces into line, it is a major supply for EU oil, it would scare the crap out of them. However, my guess is that this is what it is all about, scare the EU and Nato, Russia seems to be seeing how far it can push things.

Re: Georgia vs Russia conflict, thoughts please..?

Okay...I stand corrected there. Thanks Wolster.
Last night on TV, the news on the independent channel (not corporate owned) stated that the 2000 strong Georgian contingent in Iraq was flown home by the US.
Curiouser and curiouser.

Re: Georgia vs Russia conflict, thoughts please..?

Does this also mean that someone is pulling strings as in "I regret I must take sole control of the country for the sake of stability" etc. I wonder who that could be if it is the case?
