WORLD BRIEFING | MIDDLE EAST; Iran: Moroccan Wins Holocaust Cartoon Contest
Iran awarded a Moroccan artist, Abdollah Derkaoui, the $12,000 top prize in a show called the Holocaust International Cartoon Contest, on exhibit in Tehran. The show, staged in retaliation for the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in European newspapers, drew international condemnation. The winning work, from among 204 entries from Iran and abroad, including the United States, depicted an Israeli crane piling blocks on Israel’s security wall and gradually obscuring Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. A picture of the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz appears on the wall. A Brazilian and a Frenchman shared second prize. The exhibit curator, Seyed Masoud Shojai, said the contest would be an annual event. “Actually,” he added, “we will continue until the destruction of Israel.”....
