It's a complicated issue but in a sense the thing that many Eastern European peoples had in common with the Nazis was anti-semitism. Local populace helped round up Jews in many locations, particularly Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine. After the war, of course, they blamed the remaining Jews for bringing communism, and they didn't want Jews reclaiming their property which had been expropriated.

Ironically, in Poland now there is a resurgence of interest in Jewish culture. In the old Jewish quarters of some cities one can find Jewish delicatessins and restaurants and Klezmer music, but few if any Jews.
