25 August 1941

• British and Russian forces occupy Iran. All resistance ceases after four days.
• Vichy Deputy Leader Pierre Laval is shot four times by student Paul Collette as he sees off French volunteers leaving to fight with the Germans in Russia. Lovat (who survived the attack) was executed as a traitor after the war.

The Duke of York, younger brother of King George is killed when his Sunderland flyingboat crashes near Wick in Scotland

25 August 1944

• Romania declares war on Germany
• Finland begins peace talks with Russia
• Russian's capture the Estonian city of Tartu

Note 1: Around sixty Wellington and Hampden bombers attack the city which is covered in thick cloud and bombing is widely inaccurate. The only bombs to fall within the city limits destroy a wooden summerhouse in the suburbs slightly injuring two people.

Note 2: General De Gaulle enters Paris to a raptuous welcome.
