Five British minesweepers working off the Normandy coast are attacked by RAF Spitfires and Typhoons. Two of the ships are sunk and one is badly damaged. A total of 117 seamen being killed. A Court of Enquiry later blamed the Navy for not informing the Air Force that the ships were at that location.
