I understand that this forum is supposed to be for family members of Zoners. Please forgive me.
I've known Rob August for nigh on 20 years. We served together in E/2/2, back when General Al Gray wouldn't send that battalion to the 7-Day Store for a loaf of bread, but that's a different story.
When Rob went to Embassy Duty, and I went to Sea Duty shortly thereafter, we lost personal contact, but never broke contact completely. We bust each other's balls constantly, but we have kept in touch by mail, computer, and phone constantly, even if we've only been face to face a few times in that period.
Last night, Rob's father passed away. Corporal George H. August Sr., USMC, fought in some of the toughest battles of the Pacific War. After the war, he came home and raised his family. Rob's mom passed away years ago.
Dad (as we all knew him) was Rob's hero, no doubt about it. He wanted to be like his Dad, and wanted to make him proud. Though I never met Dad, I have no doubt he succeeded.
Corporal August has been fighting cancer and Alzheimer's for several years. He succumbed yesterday. Funny, even though I never personally met the man, I'm having trouble seeing the screen right now, and I ache for my pal. In a sense, the passing was a good thing for Dad, but I can feel Rob's pain.
Semper Fidelis, Mr. August.
