Thread: Day vs Night Bombing?

    Re: Day vs Night Bombing?

I remember seeing the last Mossie fly in England shortly before it got trashed. Imagine gluing a few wooden lolly sticks together and strapping two Spits together on this
The Mossie was always designed to be a twin, however you weren't too far wrong about it's load out. The Operational load out of a Mossie was really quite high, imagine a large force of ultra fast bombers and the destruction they could reap.
Unfortunately their full potential in this field was never capitalised. Having said that they were used in almost every other roll you could think of and performed very well.
The only time this didn't happen was when they shipped a load out to South East Asia, the heat and humidty made them fall apart, quite literally. The glues used to bond the airframes and skins etc broke down under these conditions and they had to be scrapped.

If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal wasn't for you anyway!

Indeed, a Mossie could carry a 5,000Ib bomb load all the way to Berlin, which was the same bomb load as a B-17 could carry over that distance ( though a Avro Lancaster could carry over 8,000Ib )

imagine a large force of ultra fast bombers and the destruction they could reap.
From 1944, 8 Group RAF Bomber Command (the Light Night Striking Force) started operating as a independent bombing force using up to 200 Mosquito's in its attacks. This force flew 27,239 sorties for the loss of 108 aircraft

Having said that they were used in almost every other roll you could think of and performed very well.
The Mossie was also the Allies highest scoring night fighter with over 600 victories credited to it

If voting could change things, it'd be against the law.
