I had been a member of a local canary breeders club when i did start out breeding canaries.Boy i thought being a member of the Australian Labor and Liberal Parties was political and backstabbing. that paled into ammatuer hour compaired to the buffoons that ran the canary breeders club. In a short amount of time (less than 3 months) I refused to attend meetings andso did the new members that joined (ok there were only 5 of us but in small societies such as ours was 5 new members is substantial) we ended up all quitting the club.

The major problem that the old guard, although they did welcome us but from the get go they were suspiscious of us, we felt that we were not welcomed, although i started from scratched some my fellow newbies had been breeders for years, it became obvious to us newbies that we were shunned because the us newbies were always overlooked in competitions (I have to exclude myself in this as i did not display my birds in competions). The same old guard won competition after competition. I challenged an awarding of a prize that was won by our VP because according to international standards of breeding and showing Border Canaries her bird did not meet the minumum international standard in dog terms it was a runt, but my protest was overturned.

Ironically today the canary club has folded as the old guard died out and could not replace members quick enough. I have an interest in models, i was interested in joining a local club that is a IMPS affiliated club, but i saw the same ol' same ol', but what stunned me was that many saw building models as a very serious business. Many of the members had spent 10's of thousands of dollars equiping out their studio's (yes folks that what many called their areas where they built their models). They considered any model that was not super-detailed to the max with every aftermarket knick knack to them was not a model.

One builder built military ships and always boasted that his ships contained a minimum of 28,000 parts and each of his models took 3 to 5 years to build, these super duper models always won. For me i just loved to build straight out of the box and using nothing more that a pair of cutters a nail file and glue and build a model whilst sitting on my bed and paint it as best i can with a can auto spray paint and touching it up with a plain old paint brush that i used in kindy, and after all that if i am happy and i always am then my model is success. I dont need to shove hundreds of thousands of extra parts and turning a $20 project into something i need to mortgage the house to build to gain satisfaction.

So i refused to join, now i don't build military models anymore i build Warhammer 40,000 models, it is easy for me when i build and paint my models, just put them together and cover in black and paint the eys red or any other colour, easy peasy. I am putting together a hypothetical German terror demi-division. I have so far built and painted two companies & company commanders, a battalion commander and mystic medicine man, the whole company takes about an hour to build and paint 10 figures.

Boy i can ramble on but yeah i build models i love and decided long ago to stick to within my limits of expertise, and if anyone does not like that then they can go jump.

There ye go! That's the attitude! You have to make yourself happy. Screw everyone else. They aren't paying your bills, they aren't doing your laundry, they're not making yer dinner. You'll never please them all anyway, so concentrate on yourself! There's the fighting attitude I expect from a Forum Hero! (sorry, Zoners... Inside joke from somewhere else)

I could like to throw up a small caution flag, though. Don't be afraid of expanding your areas of expertise. There may be something you don't know you're good at yet!

The ex-prez is seen as something of a 'club champion' because he's the 'best' at building models. To be sure, he's very skilled but I've seen better...even within the club. I joined when he was president. At the end of the year, there was a change and a new guy was elected. He was fresh, fun, had a great sense of humour and tried to inject some life into meetings. I emailed him once to congratulate him on his new approach. Then one day he resigned and I haven't seen him since. The old president would sit right at the front of the meetings with his hands behind his head in that classic 'one day you'll be as smart as I am' pose.
We have a single modelling event in this country and it's the IPMS Expo held once a year...it's a competition and anyone can enter...but if you do, there's hell to pay at our club because they 'don't believe in competitions'. That's as may be but my thinking is, if you enter, you need to be prepared to lose just as much as you need to be prepared to win...we're all grown ups (well...so I thought).
It's a double shame for me because I've really 'put in' to this club but in a low key way. I've shared my resources with guys I hardly know, given people parts and scanned my references for guys to use...in February when we reconvene, I think there are a couple of people who need to have their hypocrisy pointed out and one guy who needs a punch in the nose. I'd give it to him but I consider that kind of behaviour well beneath me.
I'm amazed at how something that is 'merely' a hobby and not really changing the world can become so serious (and petty) for these people. And here was me thinking it was all about fun.
Seriously, I can't remember the last time I felt so offended.

There is one way to bring down anyone in authority just imagine them on the dunny choking out a brown mullet. It does put them into perspective as been just as falible as the rest of us.

Damn Nick, what can say but that sucks. Like Steve pointed out it happens and the most damage done is to the hobby.

I guess they don't know you like we do, or such an accusation would never have been made.
