BV 238 Behemoth of the Luftwaffe

The Blohm und Voss BV 238 V1 prototype made it's first flight in March of 1944. Weighing in at 111,987lbs. empty and 176,370lbs. loaded, it was the heaviest aircraft of the war. Powered by six 1,900hp Daimler-Benz 603G engines it could reach a maximum speed of 264mph. A heavily armed V4 version was being built which carried two 20mm cannons as well as 20 13mm guns, it was also to carry a very heavy load of bombs. The whole project was canceled in late summer 1944 after the V1 was strafed and sunk by P 51's.

On one of the Der Adler magazines in my collection there is an article about the BV 238 , i will see if i can scan it if you want.

The article is on the Der Adler on the bottom right of the photo .

There is also some good gun camera footage from a P47 as it makes several strafing runs on the BV 238 while it's on the water.

I will have to take a photo of the article , my scanner is not working that good.
But i also noticed that it is not an article on the BV238 , it's an article on its little brother the BV222.

Woah, that would be over 4 feet long (if I'm figuring correctly)!

Nah, you don't build aircraft in that scale Tom.

Nick is a modeller and would build it in 1/48 if he was going to build one.
    (Or in another aircraft scale.)

Its a shame the prototype BV 238 never survived the war.

But then not many WWII prototype aircraft actually did survive after the war ended and unfortunately most of them ended up being sent to some scrapheap somewhere to be lost forever.

    Cheers,
