In response to the earlier queries, I would suggest that the discoloration on the faces is due to the dust kicked up marching across the steppe in summer. In order for that to be from powder smoke off a 37mm PAK, they'd have to have fired off about a truckload and a half of shelss!!

Well, might have been from smoke and such but definitely combat grim.

These guys have just been in a fight.

Dust from a march would have wiped from around the face from time to time and soft cover would have been swapped for helmets on a summer march.

Plus, these guys are wearing the gun harnesses. Those were used to jockey the gun from firing position to firing position in the field, but never as a way to tow a gun on a march.
