Very interesting photos, those, The Soviet rig has always looked so interesting to me.....for some reason, it just doesn't look like a reliable platform, yet it was.

SdKfz 4/1 Panzerwerfer 42
Auf Selbstfahrlafette

Basically an armored version of the Maultier (mule) truck with a Carden-Lloyd suspension. The SdKfz 4/1 had a flat sloping rear deck that was mounted with 10 barreled, 150mm Nebelwerfer that could be traversed and elevated from the protection of inside the vehilce.

In service from 1944 SdKfz 4/1 normally had a crew of four and in addition to the rockets was fitted with either an MG 34 or 42.

Great shots mate! You know, these are really facinating to me.....I've been meaning to look and see if Axis & Allies Miniatures has this in one of their sets! Magna has one in his current game, and it's an amazing weapon to have in your arsenal. How prevelant were these in the war, and what front did they see the majority of their action?

Some of you might find this interesting. I was surprised to locate this many photos on this beast and some information. Not much is covered on this little know variant of the SdKfz 4/1 Panzerwerfer 42...

8 cm Vielvachwerfer Maultier 40

Produced sometime between 1943 and 1944, this Katusha like rail fired rocket launcher was mounted on the Panzerwerfer 42.

In an obvious attempt to copy the Katusha system, two rows of twelve rails were installed which was capable of elevating and traversing. Each rail was 186 cm in length and each fitted with 2 8cm or 80 mm rockets.

Preparing to fire

This gave the vehicle the capability of firing as many as 48 rockets from a single loading, then moving quickly to another location before enemy artillery could pin point where the smoke trails originated from.

It appears that these vehicles were issued only to Waffen SS units on the Eastern Front and the exact number built is unknown.
