Umlaut icons - schnell!

I am a member of Feldgrau, Axis History Forum and German War Machine, as well as WWIIZone, and one thing that AHF has, which is a great idea, is a series of icons, just like the smilies to the right of this post, with a,e and o with umlauts. Most people don't have a german keyboard, and I know someone tried to explain about setting up your own keyboard with a series of four digit figures and the alt key to have your own umlauts, but if they were right next to the message board, you could just click on and away you'd go! The only problem about the AHF umlaut icons are they are lower case only, no capitals, however, it's a very handy feature. How about it?

I'll look into that. I'm not sure how they do it elsewhere but I'm sure that it involves some code modifications.

Re: Umlaut icons - schnell!

Press and hold left alt key. Then, with your num pad on, use these combinations on numerical (or numeric, sorry for my English) keyboard.
Alt 129 = ü
Alt 154 = Ü
Alt 148 = ö
Alt 153 = Ö
Alt 132 = ä
Alt 137 = ë
Alt 225 = ß

When you pressed one of these combinations, release the left alt key. I've got Polish keyboard and it works pretty good, as you can see.

Re: Umlaut icons - schnell!

Hi TPMM! First up, I'm with Jim, your English is a million times better than my Polish mate, so don't worry about it! Second, thanks for the tip about the alt keys, and I did a bit of experimenting trying to find a capital A and I did!

alt 129 - ü
alt 154 - Ü
alt 148 - ö
alt 153 - Ö
alt 132 - ä
alt 142 - Ä
alt 225 - ß

This is going to be a big help (although the umlaut icons would be easier), thanks again TPMM!

Re: Umlaut icons - schnell!

TPMM, this is *most* helpful, thanks! This is definitely faster than copying-pasting from character map, which is what I had been doing in the past.

Temujin, if you highlight the character you want, it will tell you what key strokes you need to type it. Actually, it often gives two different ways, but I'm not entirely sure what the other format is. I just use the found numeric keystrokes.

Re: Umlaut icons - schnell!

This topic sort of poked me to find out how to type those characters on my Mac. Are there any Mac users around here besides me? Anyway, here's a few I found:

ß - option-s
ä - option-u then a
Ä - option-u then shift-a
ö - option-u then o
Ö - option-u then shift-o
ü - option-u then u
Ü - option-u then shift-u

Here's a Nordic character I found while I was at it:

ø - option-o
Ø - option-shift-o
