What kind of tank is this?

What kind of tank is it in this photograph? It was seen on Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. It's probably dated in early 1944, as I noted in the caption.

WW2DB: [Photo] African-American troops of the US Army 24th Infantry Division advancing behind a tank, near Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, circa early 1944

Please help. Thanks!

Re: What kind of tank is this?

I have definitely ruled out M4A1. What variant do you think it is? A3?

Re: What kind of tank is this?

I know the marines were sent the diesel variant so there would be no problems with fuel as they would have the same as the navy used. Some that was the A2, some the A3.

I don't know if petrol versions were sent to the Pacific or not.
