Getting to see his old P-38 and the pilot who shot him down had to be a bit 'over whelming'.
Great article,thanks!

Re: Downed WWII U.S. flier spent 65 years repaying New Guinea residents who helped hi

The people of Australia have nothing but admiration and respect for the people of New Guinea. There are so many who were helped by these people, many of whom lost their own lives doing so.

Many Australians now take the trek along the Kokoda track which has become such an important part of our ties with New Guinea. I have not heard of any who were not profoundly moved once they find out about the sacrifices made along it.

I think if any Government in Australia decided to stop giving aid to New Guinea there may be a short, violent, civil war in this country with a new government after.

For Mr. Hargesheimer to make such a contribution to people who deserve it so much is a tribute to him worth more than any medal.

Thanks to everyone who has replied

I'm not sure about Rocky Mt. News policy about keeping articles -- so
if it is a dead link you can try googling:

the pilot was Fred Hargesheimer who was shot down on June 5, 1943

He was hid by the natives in the the village of Ea Ea on the island of
New Britain.
