Re: Women of the Reich

Bund Deutscher Madel

The BDM was an organization comprised of German teenage girls lending their support to the war effort. Wartime tasks included hospital services, train station services, neighborhood help, delivering mail, air raid services and work in preschools and kindergartens.

Other services provided by this group included:

- Household help, child care and cleaning services for families who had many children or where the husband was away serving in the armed forces.
Store and office help

- Store clerks, secretaries, and factory workers. These were often jobs that needed workers to replace women who were on maternity leave, or men who were serving as soldiers.

- Helping with the offloading of wounded at train stations, collecting medicinal herbs, helping with apothecary work, or working as nurse aides at hospitals

- Visiting injured soldiers at hospitals, making care packages, or otherwise supporting the soldiers. BDM girls could also take courses in fields such as stenography or morse code should they chose to become Helferinnen with the armed forces when of age.

Hmmmm, I hope I'm not bringing anything uncooth up. I've heard the term "Feld Maus" (field mice) and always assumed it was a term for the women

Not to take this too far off topic, but "Organisation Todt" was run under the control of Fritz Todt and then Albert Speer after Todt's death in February 1942. Under Speer, it "employed" increasing numbers of Fremdarbeiter (slave laborers from occupied countries), prisoners of war, concentration camp inmates, and Germans rejected from military service. Many of them did not survive the war. They were simply worked to death.

Now, this is strange. Two photos from two different sources. That is the same bridge, and honestly think its the same group. I can match at least two women and one of the officers.

If so than the second photo must have been taken before they poured the schnapps.
