Re: Women of the Reich
I have read that, the German people, once the Reich surrendered, got rid of or hid anything they thought would make them look like supporters of the Nazi cause, this would likely include "Hero Shots" and pictures taken during warfare etc.
I know some very interesting stuff has resurfaced, including rare colour footage. As well pictures that have sat in storage whether in Germany or in victors nations, now have been surfacing as the people they belonged to or have procession of them have passed on, their relatives or others finding them are selling them. Some is pure greed to be sure. Some have no idea their value historically. Some in the family class may only be selling those pictures that don't have Grand Dad or Mom in them, this may account for dumping of Girlfriend shots, after no one likes to remember there own parents as sexual beings much less Ol'GrandPapa or Mama. To be sure any shots of them in the field are not in the to be remembered class as would any shots with Hitler or such.
I know this drives people like Paul crazy, and rightly so, all my Grandfathers WWI stuff was stolen by movers when they moved. Even between the Wars their was a market for WWI collectibles. My Aunt even remembers the Police Officer telling my Grandfather that the thieves would had buyers lined up much as if they were jewel thieves. Problem was unless caught red handed police in those times didn't put much if any effort into investigating these type of robberies.
