Re: Distinguished Women

One of my next reads, Heather. I've seen the critiques were a little tough on that book, but I don't care for their opinion...Dick Winters is a national treasure; one of the top 10 people I'd like to meet.

Re: Distinguished Women

I do disagree with some of his suppositions, like that Stephen Ambrose is one of the greatest military historians. I would agree that Mr. Ambrose was extremely effective in carpturing the spirit of his subjects, though he stumbled over some of the facts.

Major Winters is very honest and frank. There were some excerpts that was wondered about, but his reputation is such that I accepted them!

All in all it was an excellent and easy read. I started it less than 24 hours ago and am 60 pages from the end.

Re: Distinguished Women

I have read his book. I enjoyed it. His view of leadership meshes with mine completely. I think it should manditory reading for young officers. He is clearly a leader who could inspire his men to greatness

I am more interested in getting the view thru the eye of the guy (or gal) on the frontlines then some historian. Even if some of fact might be wrong.

Re: Distinguished Women

I agree with you Pat, the moral lessons and personal experience make it must read, but I would say for anyone interested in being a better person or who has a leadership position. The lessons he teaches are true in all honorable pursuits and make him successful in any honorable endeavor. Thus, he would have been a lousy politician!

He is an amazing fellow, to say the least. I too would rather hear his accounts straight from him, than even the most acclaimed historian.

Follow up

Do not know if you noticed this Biscuit in the link in the other forum

During one month in Anzio beachhead there were 19,000 casualties and the Germans even bombed hospitals where 4 nurses got Silver Stars for staying with their patients during bombings.

Military Nurses: VA's Shabby Treatment of Forgotten Angels - Salem-News.Com

While not a MoH a silver star is not to shabby either. I think we might have been just missing data on the awards to women in WW2. If they received 4 Silver stars it is like a fair number of other awards and commendation's were made

Re: Distinguished Women

Thanks for including that link Pat! I had meant to post it and then forgot. The data I posted for this thread is only MOH, DSC, and Navy Cross recipients, thus the excluded Silver Star. I'll see if there's a list for Silver Stars as well. One of the ladies mentioned in that article, Mary Wilson, is discussed in this thread: The Angel of Anzio.
