Re: Planes Of The First War In The Air
For my 25th birthday, my girlfriend, her brother and my best mate all combined resources and bought me a forty minute flight in a Tiger Moth. It's the only time I've ever been in an open cockpit aircraft and it was an amazing experience. The thing that stayed with me was that as we were 'thundering' down the runway to take off, cars on the road next to the airfield were easily overtaking us. There was a hole in the floor where the control column had been removed. The pilot never told me he was going to do some 'maneuvering'...he just did a wing-over which is a shallow dive at full speed, then cut power, pull up and hard right rudder so the plane turns over on its wing-tip. Nothing very spectacular...but he did it without warning. I'm almost certain that guy is still prying my fingernails out of the leather coaming over the instrument panel. I was able to speak to him via radio...I had to push a button on the panel. I asked him to please not do that again without telling me unless he relished the idea of cleaning all kinds of panic induced stuff out of his cockpit.
