Planes Of The First War In The Air


Curtiss Jenny-JN4-3

With a crew of two, the American built Curtiss Jenny had an overall length of 27 feet with a wing span of 43 feet and 7 inches. Powered by a Curtiss OX-5 Inline piston 90 hp engine, The Jenny had a maximum speed of 65 knots with a service ceiling of 6,500 ft.

Armed with twin, forward firing machine guns with ability to carry wing slung bombs, the Jenny had a maximum take-off weight allowance of 1920 lbs.



Sopwith Camel F-1

Arriving on the Western Front in May, 1917, this single seater British fighter had a length of 18 feet 9 inches with a wing span measuring 28 feet and was armed with two forward firing Vickers machine-guns.

The Sopwith-Camel's 130 hp Clerget engine gave it a maximum speed of 115 mph with a ceiling of 19,000 ft. and a flight endurance of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

This aircraft had a reputation as a deadly trench-strafer.



SPAD-13

A seat fighter the French Spad-13 entered service 1917. The SPAD had a top fighting speed of 137 mph and a maximum ceiling of 22,000 feet.

Armed with twin, fixed Vickers machine guns over 8,000 were built for use by French, U.S. Italian & Belgian Forces.

The Spad remained in served until 1923.

Airco DH-11 British Bomber

With a crew of three, the DH-11 bomber had a length of nearly 40 feet with a wing span of 65 and one half feet. Powered by two Liberty 12A V-12 piston, 400 hp engines and maximum take off weight of 9.060 pound, the DH-11 could achieve a maximum speed of 114 knots, climb to a service ceiling of 10,000 feet in 11 minutes and enjoying a flight duration of 6 hours.

The DH-11 could carry a bomb load of 920 pounds internally, and could be armed with up to two .303 inch Lewis guns on scarff rings at both nose and midships gunners cockpits.

Nice work Paul...a great thread.
The Sopwith Camel also gained a reputation as difficult to fly. In the hands of an expert it was a formidable opponent but in the hands of a novice, it was a death trap.
The SPAD (an acronym for something...I'll find out) VII and XIII were awesome aircraft for the time...notably in the hands of American ace Eddie Rickenbacker who hungered to fly the type from the first time he saw one.
