What started it all...
The event that started the cycle that led to the Great War was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. In a nutshell, Princip was a supporter of a southern Slav state free of Austrian control. Austria-Hungary used the assassination as a pretext for imposing harsh demands on Serbia. Serbia rejected the demands and mobilized its forces, resulting in a declaration of war by Austria-Hungary. Russia then mobilized her forces, and Germany responded with a mobilization and declarations of war on Russia and on France. When German troops violated Belgian neutrality on the way to France, Great Britain joined in and the rest was, as they say, history.
