Re: WW1 Camouflage

"Dazzle" camo used on an English plane:

The Germans developed a "Lozenge" pattern camo for many of their aircraft, as seen on this heavy bomber:

"Lozenge" camouflage colors varied widely, here are two examples:

Re: WW1 Camouflage

A Fokker D VII at the RAF Museum in Lozenge camo, the D VII was the first to use this camo pattern.

Another D VII in Lozenge:

D VII at the National Museum USAF. Interesting to note the color variations on these aircraft.

Interesting how the application of the concept has varied through the years.

Re: WW1 Camouflage

A museum replica of fighter ace Ernst Udet's D VII. The Lozenge camo is there but he obiviously had no intrest in stealth or camouflaging who he was. Udet went on to become the second highest scoring ace of WW1.

Re: WW1 Camouflage

Pfalz E. VI in hand painted lozenge camouflage. At first lozenge camo was painted on the fabric but it proved to be too time consuming to apply and heavy. Later on the airplane fabric was preprinted with the pattern.

Re: WW1 Camouflage

I feel I may be preaching to the choir, we got a lot of great modelers here and they probably know all there is to know about lozenge camo. Here's some other camouflage patterns.

Mottled artillery camo:

Re: WW1 Camouflage

The barrel and roof section of the 28cm German railgun "Bruno" are on display at the Australian War Museum in Canberra. The museum stripped the post war paint and graffiti off and got it down to it's original paint scheme which was then accurately refurbished. The colors are kind of surprising!
