Re: What book are you reading now...

I just started B.H. L-H's The Rommel Papers.

I still need to write a review of our Feldgrau buddy halder's book, The Germans in Normandy. May be a while, I loaned it to a guy at work....

Black Edelweiss by Johann Voss. Nice maps in there Tom! I still remember in the foreword that Herr Voss had some humourous exchanges with you via email?

It's a good read. Will post a review when finished.

Thanks, Kevin!

Well, I don't necessarily recall those e-mails being humorous, but he is a very nice man. I've been privileged to spend some time with him. Rather modest and soft spoken, but a good conversationalist and very knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects.

About two years or so ago, Kit Bonn received word that there was a petition to create a Johann Voss 1/6 figure. Herr Voss was aghast at the idea! It was almost as if some form of cult was growing around him. That idea was shot down to the best of my knowledge.

Re: What book are you reading now...

Reading two right now-"Sea of Thunder" by Evan Thomas--a quadruple biography covering Halsey, Evans, Ugaki and Kurita and their actions at Leyte Gulf. Nothing new revealed but highly readble. And Joseph Alexander's "Closing In-The Marines on Iwo Jima". This is one of a 20-odd volume series of monographs put out by the USMC for the 50th Anniversary. They're short (about 50 to 100 pages) but well written, nicely illustrated covering the usual (Guadalcanal, etc) and offbeat (Marines in the ETO, role of women in the Marine Corps, etc)-very well done and worth having.

Do you have all 20+ volumes?

RECON SCOUT, about a guy who enlisted in the horse cavalry just before they got rid of the horses. Went to Africa with the 91st Cav Recon Sqdn.

I just read the part where he and his buddy watched Churchill piss in front of their M3 Scout Car.

Re: What book are you reading now...

No, unfortunately not, but I'm definitely on the lookout as most are out of print. CBI Media has a number of volumes along with the Govt. Printing Office and sometimes you get lucky with Alibris. If you're interested, some are on-line in their entirety. Am also trying to collect all the USMC monographs from WW2. Battery Press is your best bet as they have reprinted them all.

Re: What book are you reading now...

Thomas Cutler's "The Battle of Leyte Gulf"-so far it's pretty good, very readable, gives an even handed view of the battle-would chance it to say it's a must read for anyone interested in the naval war in the Pacific. Has anyone picked up a copy of Vego's "Leyte 1944" from the Naval Institute Press?
