new (used) books

last night i finally got around to checking out the goodwill book section in my town. i was surprised. i thought i would only find cook books and old romance novels. they actually had a pretty big history section. for six dollars i purchased
David Irvings's 'the war path' and a big picture book about the german submarine wolf packs. i'm almost finished reading 'gestapo', so this gives me something to start after i'm done. Irving's book also has a few "outstanding" maps....

Irving? If I am not mistaken he is still behin Austrian bars. But I may be wrong. I like his books. They are somehow funny. I would love to be able to walk into a bookstore in Austria and buy a copy. But...I'll never get tired to write it...it is not allowed to own his books in Austria.

i don't know much about him. i'm still new to a lot of this stuff. i never knew he got himself into any trouble. i'll have to look it up. i've heard his name around, but i never knew what he wrote about. i will say that when i was in line with my two new books the guy behind me kept giving me this evil stare. sometimes i wonder if i offend people just because they see me with certian books.(of course anything with hitler's photo on it is sure to make some folks uncomfortable) i can't really talk to my friends or coworkers about my intrest. they don't like to hear certain names mentioned and they really don't like it when i brag about new books or articles i come across about the war. no matter what's inside the books. i've been looking for history clubs or book gatherings that discuss war but i can't find any around here. the book store in my neighborhood specializes in rare history books so i always want to strike up conversations with the owner. i just never know where to start.

He was at one time a reasonably respected historian. Then he became a strident Holocaust denier and was imprisoned in Austria where free speech about certain topics is still verboten. Don't get me wrong, I detest Irving and his views, but I believe in his right to free speech.
