I dislike them for their historical inaccuracies but hell they are still good action reads!

Back to the topic at hand...

I'm glad that article gave you other insights. I mean its hard to say yay or nay. I kinda consider this the "All Quiet" for the East Front.

So do I. Yet it's little known among 'lay-readers' (people who don't normally read books with a military theme). As I mentioned above, I've heard 'All Quiet' discredited too. My mother (of all people) had a 'hit-list' of five books that were compulsory reading for all 'well-rounded people'. Among them was 'All Quiet'. The others were 'Animal Farm' and '1984' by Orwell, 'Brave New World' by Huxley and 'One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovitch' by Solzhenitsyn. (Big surprise, my Mum was a bit of a lefty ;(). I've read 'em all and I'm glad I have.

Good choices Brave New World is by far my 2nd favorite in literature behind Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein.

I don't care, true or not its a decent book that tells a story. I think The Forgotten Soldier has held a place on the Commandant's reading list for some time. And I think I can see why, he paints a very ugly picture of war.
