Munchebergs other panzer battalion, together with the Hetzers of Kampfgruppe "1001 Nights", was on the far left or northern wing of the attack. "1001 Nights" took almost 100% casualties, advancing bravely for several miles through a curtain of annihilation. The Hetzers were placed in the inane position of having to drive one by one through a railroad underpass, a maneuver which lasted until after sunrise and created a traffic jam which the Russian PAK gunners and artillery observers must have enjoyed enormously. After negotiating the underpass the tank destroyers formed into smaller groups and resumed the attack, but by then it was too late. By afternoon 25 out of 49 Hetzers had been knocked out...
