Welcome to the World War II Gaming section!

Welcome to the World War II Gaming section! Site Administrator Jim O has been kind enough to provide us all this section to discuss World War II gaming, and I thank him greatly for that!

There are a lot of great games on World War II out there, both boardgames and computer/platform games. I've been playing wargames for many years, and find many hours of fun and entertainment fly by in what seems like minutes. And they not only entertain, but many also teach us valuable lessons; and lend insight and perspective in battles we've all read about, seen documentaries on, or enjoyed on film and television. These games run the gamut from indepth simulations of actual battles and operations, to beer & pretzel fare. From little cardboard chits pushed around the battle map, to miniatures. From simplistic, to grognard-complexiity heaven. So pull up a keyboard and share what you like, what you play, what you hate (but be civil!), what you played or bought at conventions, and why you're a wargamer like myself. This is part of the Zone where we can discuss one of the greatest hobbies and pastimes in the vast subject that is World War II.

And we even have room for non-world War II battle games.

Let the fun begin!

Thanks McCoy and PM!

My first real boardgame wargames were Avalon Hill. Panzer Leader and Panzer Blitz were my first. I have a whole bookcase shelves full, I'm afraid. Luftwaffe is a classic!

McCoy, what is Close Combat on, infantry?

Re: Welcome to the World War II Gaming section!

Close Combat was produced by Atomic Games n' distributed by SSI back in the days, game #4 n' 5 was distributed by Microsoft. The game is down to grouplevel with halfsquads n' other types of squads as well as different AFV's. The soldiers act induvidualy n' can either break under fire or get heroic (read stupid) as well as they get experience from the battles they take part in.

Think of Close Combat as ASL ported to PC...

Re: Welcome to the World War II Gaming section!

My first experience with WWII PC gaming came with what some say is a less than stellar example: "Squad Leader". Man, I did not enjoy that game in the slightest, personally. Only much later did I learn it is widely considered sub-prime, though I'm sure there are those that enjoy it. I didn't think badly of the game itself, but the mechanics of play were tough to control, and I didn't much care for the hoping from action square to action square.

I've got Close Combat 3 - Market Garden... Converted it over to WWI "Great War"...really cool!
My favorite PC game is Panzer Elite without a doubt!
Favorite board game.....Hard to say, I'll take an inventory and get back to you! Got about 20 of 'em somewhere.

Re: Welcome to the World War II Gaming section!

I've played the board Avalon games before the computer was invented and
they were good fun. But i never went back when computer games came out.
I've tried a bunch of those WW2 games over the years like Squad leader and
call of duty, medal of honor. But none compared to Steel Panthers in the
way you can set up a battle any way you want, decide on the best defense or offense to use, and the amount of differn't vehicals is incredible.

There is a new one that came out 2 years ago and then this last fall it had the expanssion for it, (Company of Hero's) this one is really good, and even better when you download mods for it.
