Re: Have you vere attended a Gaming Convention?
I went to my first gamecon in 1971 at George AFB, California. The USO sponsored a very primitive Star Trek game and a needlessly complex series of tank battles played on the gym floor with long pieces of string. Had great fun watching the arguments about line of sight and range (some almost came to blows). Also had a local sergeant who was selling an obvious Star Trek rip off book game until Paramount slapped him upside the head. I got my first commission creating new characters and ship designs for him, but the new game (Alien Space) never really took off.
I have gone to the Game Faire at a local community college off and on since the early 80s. Traditional board games like chess and backgammon with some WWII types and RPGs. I enjoy watching demonstrations by SCA members. Haven't attended in five years, but I hear they're getting fairly heavy into computer games now.

Re: Have you vere attended a Gaming Convention?
Wow, I can just visualize these fellows beating the stuffing out of each other over those tank battles...now what would have been more entertaining, the game or the fisticuffs?
Yeah, computer games are so dominant these days; and boardgaming was looking pretty weak for a long time, but the later has really gained momentum of late. I would hazard a guess (and the possible wrath of my fellow bloggers) that some folks are seeing their children turn into keyboard and joystick drones, and have seen the benefits of the social aspects of head-to-head gaming with live humans in front of them. Plus, the educational and tactile aspects are better emphasised in boardgaming versus computer gaming IMHO. |

I agree! Face to face over cardboard is so much more fun than over the internet. I have turned my Video Game junkie nephews into board game loving Grognards, and they love me for it too.

Re: Have you vere attended a Gaming Convention?
Hey everyone, just wanted to update you on the latest gaming convention to hit the St Louis area. I am getting to go for free! My favorite number. They just want me to GM a couple of games, and one of these will be an overloard M44 game! The other will be a Star Trek game I have with miniatures. It will be going on the first weekend of May, I will take pics and put them up when I go. I get to go for free because I know the guy who runs the con and he is doing me a favor because I sometimes help him out at the con too. Can't wait.

Re: Have you vere attended a Gaming Convention?
Now that is inded awesome, my friend! Yes, post pictures!!! The Memoir '44 Overlord game will be amazing! For those unfamiliar, Memoir '44 is a two-Player game (though it plays awesome as Solitaire, as well!)...but the game can be played with up to 8-Players in the Overlord mode, which utilizes different players for the different sections (Left, Center, and Right Flanks on the game board; and overall Supreme Commander; and two gameboards side-by-side. An awesome sight!

Well, I'm looking so forward to it, I got the date wrong! It's the first weekend in June, not May. But, yeah, I've done overlord at cons before, and we've had some great games!
