Re: Flames of War

For those that play: I am wondering what is the general consensus on the proper scale to use for Flames of War aircraft. I know the "official" FoW Minis are 1:144, although the game is 1:100 scale.

The reason I ask is that I found a website that has a variety of planes in different scales (all a lot cheaper than the FoW minis) and I am not sure which scale to order. As a scale purist, I kind of like the idea of sticking with 1:100, but some of the 1:144 models are really nice, well painted, and cheap as well.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,

Henry

Wink Re: Flames of War

I know what you mean Henry, those planes!!! HHHMM....... I really like to match mine to scale within reason, for almost 3 years we always used the "bigger" planes. Fun to paint up and very noticable and cool when sitting on the table, but when in actual game use........ It just looked so odd with them there next to the small vehicles and infrantry, no clue on what scale either!!

But at Wally world (where I work) I did find some planes that really fit the bill, but no Russian ones, and mostly fighters that I saw. Again no idea of the scale but they do look realistic when on the game table at least for our group.

Cheers, I'll try to remember Friday to look the scale up if it is on the package for ya!!

Tom

Did you get the Cobra book yet? Mine finally arived but the stupid store is only open when I am working this week......... And closed on my lunch breaks and my days off to!!!!

Re: Flames of War

Thanks for the info on the planes. I know that TRU and Wally World have some 1:144 planes I have seen. They look cool, but unfortunately my store has a lousy selection - mostly pink Spitfires and some Me jets.

I did find this store online: Airplanes and more

I bought them out of the 1:100 scale Stukas: Corgi Stuka

And I ordered some 1:144 desert camo Stukas as well: Desert Stuka

I must be nuts, ordering two different scales, but I want to experiment and see what works for me.

And I do not yet have the Cobra book. My group is finishing up a desert battle tonight, and we hope to start a D-Day campaign in the coming weeks. So we will eventually work our way to Cobra, but not for a while.

Henry

You got it, at Wally it was the 144th scale, and I do know what you mean by selection, I dig into the shelf space all the time to see if they ever have any "good" ones!! Ha Ha.....

I took a couple hours off work today and got my Cobra book, the SS Co with the 7.5 AT guns, Panzerfausts H.Q. x 3 (can't have enough of those late-War) 4 x S 307(f) (PaK 40) halftracks ( the French ones finally in stock again!!)

And some other nice thigs, dirt cheap, like a free 2nd edition The Art of War book and the latest catalogue with the special oders ones as well I think.

And at half price because they screwed up the order 1 konigstiger Box (originally 18.00 I think) and a Platoon of Sherman 76mm M4A1 tanks (5 in a box original price 50.00??)

Very nice so now I can add those to my captured stuff that the Germans can field in Normandy as well!!!

A very merry Cheers tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best thing I saw was the 6 gun batteries for the German SS arty, very nice, and FINALLY getting the 15cm (Hummel type) arty as a regular "wheeled" type like the 10.5's!!! Now when they actually come out with the model is anyones guess!!

Cheers, up next this fall, BAGRATION action for the Eastern front, ya gotta love it!!

You boys talking about Armor Classics units at Wally World? Those didn't look too bad at all. I ended up cleaning out a Wallys near me of Armor Classics German armor...however, when compared to the new rescale sized units in my Axis & Allies minis...they just look too damned odd. Time will tell how much use they get.

Re: Flames of War

I'll have a go as long as I don't need to know anything other than units and map. You can do the rest I assume.

PS - Do we get to blow stuff up ?
