WW2 RPG - sorta . . .

Since there seems to be a few RPG type games already I figured I would throw this 2 idea out there.

A while back I was working on a sorta_RPG using the WinSPMBT game. I only got a few bites so dropped the idea. I had also considered doing the same thing using WinSPWW2 as the game engine for this if there was enough interest. The game would be needed to actually play BUT since the game is free there should be no problem getting access. Basically, what would be done is the units would be edited to represent individuals, not squads and players would control their character.

The game would be played like a regular WinSPWW2 PBeM game but instead of only 2 players, the file is passed to each player (player character) in sequence for them to make their own moves/firing. There could be vehicles (players as NPC's with a player designated to control that "vehicle" as the driver/crew). The enemy is played by another person (not involved in the player side). I had started work on limited experience point system so players could increase their skills (morale/experience, etc).

One drawback is that since it is Pbem and each player must get the file play their turn and pass it along, it is seriously slow since it could take 1-2 days per player to do their turn. With 10 players you are looking at maybe 1 month per turn, not good.

Anyway, its just a thought and is nowhere near ready but thought I would bring the idea/concept up for comment.

Another idea I had along similar lines is using ASL as the game and playing a modified version of SASL (Solitaire Advanced Squad Leader) where the players represent squad/platoon leaders and the enemy is the SASL system. Since ASL is pretty detailed it could get rather complicated so anything that could be done to streamline it would be great. Players would not need the game or know much about it to play in this version.

Thoughts, comments?

Hmmmm, some interesting ideas here. I'm not sure the file sharing aspect would work out so well, but we have a lot of Steel Panthers buffs here (see the thread...perhaps these fellas can help you figure out how feasible this is).

The SASL has a lot of merit...I own it, have read the rules, but have not played it yet. We have some ASLers here, as well, so I'll be curious to see what develops.

We are gaining new folks here at the Game Forum all the time, so be patient my friend. I'd like to see you develop something here!

Interesting ideas there, that "share" probably not for me, unless it can be cut down to something more managable for most I think.

For myself, I'm looking for mutiple games to get into, 1 that has a long life, like a battle, but maybe one post, reply order a week, then another a bit less, with maybe 2-3 posts or orders a week, then a couple that would only last a couple weeks, but maybe post heavy, hopefully on Tuesday- Wednesdays, my days off!!

Cheers, very hard to find a happy "medium", but I think between Duncan, Magna, gi-rene and now you, I just bet we can get some great things going here, and "there" as well, at least for Duncan......

Just some random thoughts for now from me, I'm looking forward to getting my new Gamers "club" going here, but more on that later!!!

What I think would be ideal is several different games ongoing at once. That allows "players" to stay busy in between any one of these games "turns" as some may have longer time periods needed to get through them depending on the system but NOT overload any one referee, GM, etc.

Hopefully I can find something that will fit in here in between the one I am running in the Napoleonic area, over "there".

DD...send a PM to Duncan....he's a big time ASLer! He may have some ideas on how to tackle an Interactive SASL game, be willing to work with you, or share the loadd in Interactive ASL/SASL games. If you guys want to give one a try, PM me and we can scedule a time to Chat in the Chat Game Room on the subject.

I have an idea on the back burner, but I want to see how may folks out there want to get Interactive Games going. But yes, I garee...many games going on at once would be a sweet thing, indeed!

Geez Tommy, I only got 10 fingers and half a brain (no current brain cells, but some on order!).

I told you to stop sniffing that plasticized cardboard from the game boxes. Now it's made your brain grow and you will be smarter than the rest of us.

Some great ideas coming out here and I like the concept of several games going at the same time. Some types may not suit some people due to tastes and probably time differences so variation would be great.

Right now I am putting together some ideas that there may be interest in. I have been trying to find a way to do an actual RPG's in a forum environment but also be able to make use of some graphics (standard play by post makes my head hurt).

What I have come up with so far is a WW2 RPG (with players characters like gi-rene is running) but using VASL to show vehicle/character locations and such. Of course it would be abstracted (hexes are 40 meters, etc) BUT it would allow the players to look at screenshots and "see" who and what is actually where in relation to their position. It would also help with range determination, blast radius' and player coordination. Not sure which RPG system I would use. I have been contemplating using a Twilight 2000 Mod I found a while back. If anyone has any recommendations I would be open to them. I'm not too familair with many of the other RPG systems out there so it would need to be something that can be picked up fairly quickly.
