Re: What's the most expensive NEW game you've ever bought?

The most expensive new game i ever bought was Avalon Hill's "The Longest Day". I cant remember the exact price, but i belive it was well over $300.00. I got it in the early eighties before AH went under.

Oh my God the Holy Grail!!!!!!!!

That game is awesome folks! I've been tracking a copy on EBay for a couple years now. Everytime an unpunched version comes up, I miss out on the bid! The reason I insist on unpunched is, this was AValon Hill's MEGA game...huge! Tons of counters. Huge map. Huge game in play. I'll get my hands on one yet!

Re: What's the most expensive NEW game you've ever bought?

At the time Longest Day came out I was buying most of the AH games. I saw the articles in the General on it. The subject matter did not interest me that much. A mega game on a single small campaign does not sound the interesting. I did not see a large replayability in it. Later articles largely confirmed my opinion.

I prefer stategic or tactical level to operational.

I hear 'ya Pat...but the Mega game holds a certain mystique to it. Usually played over several days on large tables, and moving massive amounts of counters. Good stuff to some. The people I know who play it, love it. It, and the Civil War game "Terrible Swift Sword", reign as top leaders in the Mega Game catagory.

Re: What's the most expensive NEW game you've ever bought?

Actually, now that you mention it, a mega game is my most expensive NEW game I've ever bought:

Avalanche Press's "Alamein"

$200
(though I paid less, as I'm a Gold Member, and I got it with my discount and on sale!)

One of history's turning points. The battles for Egypt waged between June and November 1942 saw the Axis ejected from Africa and placed on a steady path of retreat. Using the same game system as Island of Death, this is a gigantic game with four full-sized maps (22x34 inches each) and 2,100 playing pieces. Produced in limited quantities.

Good stuff!

Re: What's the most expensive NEW game you've ever bought?

Just got into "Flames of War". Let's see-bought 2nd Ed. of basic rules, and the "D-1" rule book on Allied Airborne in Normandy, then the real fun begins-chose to field a LW British Para company with supporting units. Then had them painted-expensive to say the least, but have no regrets. BTW-anyone looking for a MW Brit. 8th Army Motor Company?

Hey, Welcome to the Zone mate...I thin this is the first time we've crossed paths! Glad you stopped by the Gaming Forum...make it a regular stop here! Check with TRDG on the FoW fig.....he's big into FoW. I've not goten into it, yet anyway. One of the things that have kept me from it is the assemble and painting of the minis. Plus, I have a ton invested in Axis & Allies Miniatures.

Re: What's the most expensive NEW game you've ever bought?

Hello Whiterook, thanks for the warm welcome and will make it a point to stop by every so often. Just got back into gaming after a nearly 30 year hiatus (remember Panzerblitz?). My main interest in WW2 is the ground war in Europe and No. Africa so FOW is like manna from Heaven. It does run into money though and I'm in no way talented enough to assemble and paint anything on that scale. Fortunately I found a gentleman in Vegas who did a fantastic job putting together my Para Co. Never played Axis and Allies but talked with someone who recently played the "War At Sea" module and he gave it high marks. "Alamein" has certainly caught my interest as it's a favorite area of study-any tips where I can pick up a copy? And I will check with TRDG-the set is in mint condition, just waiting for a good home.

Oh yeah...still have my PanzerBlitz game!

Alamein...it's an awesome game! ...and Avalanche Press games in general are fantastic! Much more simple that the old AValon Hill type games, but just as challenging. About the only place I know of to pick up the game is off their web site, or at their booth at a game convention like Origins. It's one of their limited run games, as it is so huge and they run only so many. In fact, it may not be available on their site at the moment (I just checked, and it wouldn't come up), but you could call them and find out if, and when, it's available. EBay may offer a used one for sale, also.

Thei Avalanche Press website is:

Avalanche Press

They cover the war in Europe, but as you mentioned No.Africa, let me point out a couple specific to the desert wars:

Their "Panzer Grenadier series run the gamut of theaters, but you may want to check out "Desert Rats" which will run you $64.99 (considerably less that Alamein's $200)

And Afrika Korps, for the same price....

A cheap way out, if you end up addicted to Avalance Press like me, is to join their Gold Club membership, in which can take 10% off your orders (20% at conventions), for $30 a year dues.
