D-Day Gaming

Well, it's the D-Day anniversary tomorrow. Anyone planning to game this weekend in honor?

I know it sounds kinda weird on first thought, but this is one of the days that I generally (no pun intended) try to take off from work when during the workweek, and I spend the day watching a movie, such as The Longest Day; and play a game or two. No disrespect is meant by this. I find that I can gain a good measure of inspiration, and a large dose of rememberance through this.

I once worked for the United States Department of the Army, Department of Defense, at Fort Devens, Massachusetts; then, the last active full Army base presence in New England (long since closed by Base Realignment and Closure). One day there, I called another office on base that I dealt with on contractural issues, and spoke with a young woman, a clerk barely out of High School. It was June 6th. I said to her something to the effect of: "Wow, hard to believe D-Day was 45 years ago!". She replied, and you know what's coming: "D-Day? What's D-Day?".

Well, that struck a nerve for me. The problem is, so many are still as clueless today as they were that day at Fort Dvens almost 20 years ago. It's so sad...honestly. So, I present to you.....remember. Remember those that paid ultimate sacrifices and hardships, on all sides. In whatever manner you choose. But remember.

I will be watching The Longest Day tomorrow morning, and playing Axis & Allies: D-Day thereafter. It's my way of remembering. My way of paying homage. My Dad was in the Canadian Army on Juno Beach. He thought it was pretty cool that I took time on this day to remember those events in my own way. He got it.

So take a moment tomorrow. You don't have to play a game...or watch a movie...just please, take a moment during the morning on June 6....and remember.

Re: D-Day!!!

Its even easier to remember for me since my mother's B-Day is June 5th, 1944. My grandfather used to joke that the reason Eisenhower postponed D-Day
till the 6th was he didn't want to see the country suffer two disasters on the same day. My mother was not so amused.

Lets also remember our fallen the next day on the 7th. (June 7, 1967.The USS. Liberty) A lot of people don't know of that either and it was a little more recent.

If you are talking about the attack on the USS Liberty by the Israel Defense Force, that was June 8th 1967 during the 6 day war. It was mistakenly identified as an Egyptian destroyer.

Red face Re: D-Day!!!

Honestly I clean forgot about this very importand date sorry to say!!!

To much junk going on at work right now, otherwise no excuse here, Saving P.R. like right now as in watching it is the best way for me to really get into the moment and sacrifice all those guys from all countries made for us to even chat, post here at the Zone!! A little extreme maybe, but what if..... you think.....if D-Day NEVER happened...... NOT TO GOOD.

Cheers to all the fighting forces who gave their all for their country and the world of today and in the future.

Re: D-Day!!!

Well said sir...we owe a lot to The Greatest Generation!

Saving Private Ryan is an excellent movie, by the way. The first time I saw it, it was on one of them premium pay channels we were getting...HBO or something...and it started late. By the time the final scenes were rolling, it was well after midnight, and my wife had gotten up out of bed to hit the "powder room", and she saw the light down the hall, and came out to see what I was still doing up, and if I'd fallen asleep. Well, she came out to see me practically balling my eyes out. That "Earn it" thing just totalled me! What an impact that had, honestly. I just didn't see the movie ending with Capt. Miller (Tom Hanks) getting killed. I still tear up at the end of that movie. One of the great ones!

Wink Re: D-Day!!!

Thanks WR, I meant every word there!! I thought Ryan would have "got it" in the end when I first saw it. The impact though was'nt as much because I was to busy checking out the Tiger that took that bomb right before the bridge.......... Off topic a bit but how accurate was that bomb drop compard to reality, any thoughts? This maybe best on another forum here, but in a "crouded" town that would/could be a one in a million bomb drop from the plane one would think.....I'm no expert though!!LOL

Cheers, to another good movie like this in the future, maybe the Band of Brothers in the Pacific that is being made??

Yes,the 8th. But yep, that was the cover up story alright. An act of war is more like it. Just ask the survivors. They meet once a year. If ya don't make them mad, they might just give a sick laugh. There was absolutely no comparison to ANY Egyptian ship. It would serve you and others well to read up on it. The truth has been out for quit some time now.I'm not trying to make waves here, but being an American and seeing such a crime against our troops, urks me.No matter who commits it.

Now you've got me wanting to watch he movie again to check out that Tiger! I guess it wouldn't be the first time a Hollywood movie used a little "Artistic license" to show a big boom moment, but yes...a very accurate bomb drop indeed! Considering the amount of congestion in that area, I think it a bit of a wild shot that hit, but hey, war is strange, no?

The Band of Brothers Pacific will, I'm sure, prove a quality production. I fear I need a lot more education (as do most) in the Pacific theater, as it just doesn't seem to get the same amount of attention as ETO...this may be a nice boost to a neglected theater.
