They look very interesting Hagen. Thanks. I downloaded the free ones - two buildings and an A13 tank. I will print them out and see what they look like.

I'm sure if I add some PVA glue to the back of the sheet before I make them they will stand up pretty well.

You can never have to many buildings! I find myself looking more for buildings and terrain these days then I do figures or armor.

Absolutely. We have a big game with the full table coming up at our group. Buildings, trees, hedges, roads.... all a lot of work but it will be good.

I will be putting up a what would you do thread as we go with pics just for members here with a move / situation report at stages for everyone to have a one or two post say on what their next move would be. Could be fun and it will take us a while to play.

Meanwhile, I have printed out the free A13 tank sheet and it looks really good. A great way to play a scenario (say France 1940) without having to buy a heap of kits you may not use again.

Italeri is putting out some pretty good buildings and building ruins in 1/72, the only paper buildings I have are from the time I dabbled in 6mm wargaming. Pine trees I make from old artificial Christmas trees and deciduous trees I make from wire and clump foliage from Woodland Scenics.


I would like to find a way to make convincing roads and small streams. If you have any suggestions on 'How-To' make these up with materials I can find around the house I'ld appreciate it.

Roads and streams. Usually best on stock card or hard type card of some sort. For roads - light grey paint as a base and sprinkle on sifted gravel. It looks really good in the smaller scales.

For creeks or rivers, same base type with a brown paint for the water covered with a gloss varnish for a bit of depth. Use some paper mache or scrunched alfoil to make the banks and paint / flock them as needed. Shapes are easy to make with the card - crossroads - T roads etc. Lengths of each are usually best at 6 to 8 inches but a couple of longer straight bits on thinner backing for flexibility are good when you need to go up a hill or similar.

Thanks Dave I'll give it a try, I thought of trying sheet styrene for both rivers and roads but didn't think celluclay (a type of papermaiche) would stay put. And I never would have thought of alfoil.

I am experimenting with a portable or put away sand table design to go on my old kitchen table. The thing is I can't use sand, it's just too heavy. I have an answer though and when it is right I will put up a thread. It will solve a lot of terrain problems for me.

Hi,
I wargame with Dave & have done quite a lot of terrain creation recently.
I might have a few photos of the construction process I used to create some rivers & roads. If I can find them I will post them here.
Alfoil is great for shaping terrain. Just scrunch it up into the approximate shape you want, generally 'expanded out' from its final form. Then stick it to a base with some contact cement. Go off & do some more sections & when you come back the glue will be dry.
Then squash it down to the final shape you want.
I usually then paint the whole thing black.
After this you can paint it up using dry & wet brush techniques, or if it is bare ground paint it with PVA glue & dip it in appropriate coloured sand. After this is dry I usually put more glue on selected places & dip in 'flock'. This gives a pleasing grass & earth look. I usually use this when basing up figures as well.
