How would you add rivets?

One othe tanks I'm planning need some rivets on the back, but I don't know how how to make them. I don't even have the slitest idea of how to apply them.

Re: How would you add rivets?

I have a book on this, tho i've never done it myself.

You need a thin sheet of plastic.
And a tool die set, kinda like a hamer and a punch, but the punch is hollow
at the tip with a shape of a Hex.
Thats as close as i can come to tell you what they use, i don't know
where to buy it, maybe Squadron carries it??

Thanks Luft! I think I have something like that here, if not I'm pretty sure I whale some stuff together to get it.

Re: How would you add rivets?

You can also buy Evergreen plastic rod and cut rivets off the end.

To do it the sheet styrene method: find a punch of the correct diameter, hammer, and a rubber eraser. Punch the rivets out into the eraser.

Re: How would you add rivets?

I have actually made them by dipping a toothpick into white glue (Elmers) and depositing a tiny amount onto the surface to be revitted. Uniformity is the problem here, hard to get more that 3 or 4 to look alike, works good where you need one or two though.
When I needed a bunch of them I'd go here and buy them already made -

augmentables pages

- They've got pretty much all you need in the way of model nuts and bolts, etc. Most of the time the 1/4 scale or 1/48 scale works for me.

Re: How would you add rivets?

IFrom what I've read, it seems the Evergreen plastic FS mentions is the way to go; but honetsly, I've never used a tool & die set, so I'm probably not the one you should be listening to here

Let us know what solution you come up with, and if I think of anything when I'm actually awake, I'll certainly let you knw!

Re: How would you add rivets?

You can use a stretched sprue to make rivets by cutting 'em out. You can even shape the stretched sprue hexagonal with yer X-acto before cutting it to pieces.

Re: How would you add rivets?

A punch and die set (tool and die set) is the way to go but you'll need to part with money if you don't have one. Having said that, they're often very useful so they aren't bad to have. Get a good one if you can so you only need to buy it once. Failing that, I would use McCoy's method. However I would file the sprue or wire...whatever, into a hex shape rather than shave it...but that's just my preference. You can then 'slice' off as many rivets as you need and they'll all be the same.
