Re: Driil Bits Question

Yeah, yeah, yeah...so someone keeps telling me

THe problem is not in building the Roden...I haven't even gotten that far yet...just now looking at the instructions, trying to figure out why I didn't heed the advice of a certain Aussie friend

Re: Driil Bits Question

I think I know who you mean mate.
To my mind, not many manufacturers get everything right. Even Dragon are pretty bad instruction wise. But this is another reason why Roden kits are challenging. I've only built one and I found it less straightforward than say, a Tamiya 'Shake-'n-Make' kit. Tamiya instructions are first rate. The good thing about Roden kits, actually there are a few good things, is that once liberated from the flash and clipped off the over-thick gates, the parts are really good and in some places on my S.E.5a, fit almost invisibly. No filler required at all in some of the usual problem areas. If you take your time (as you are) and be careful with the parts (the plastic is very soft), there's no reason why a guy with your 'other' skills can't produce a great piece. I find that my best models come when I have the mindset that I'm perfectly prepared to make mistakes and even ruin the kit. That kinda gives me the 'balls' I need to experiment, try new stuff and generally 'give it a red hot go' as we say down here.

Sorry...these pics are pretty bad but you'll get the idea. The pointer in the first pic shows a seam that's almost invisible...I didn't have to fill or sand it.
Peace.

Re: Driil Bits Question

WOW...those pics are great, actually. Honestly, and I mean this...if my project in WWI air comes out even HALF as nice as your work, I'll count it a major success!

Yeah, I'm going to spend some quality time with the instructions tomorrow, and get my battleplan in order. I've been under the weather this week, and had a few days out from work, but I worked on my carrier a little, so that was nice...that, and watch TONS of Stargate SG1 DVD's!!!!

On another note, I'm kinda PO's at RB, as I'm starting to feel a certain amount of addiction with WWI aircraft...they are just so damned cool!

Re: Driil Bits Question

Indeed they are cool and rather colourful too. I've talked a lot about Roden's range and I think I should mention Eduard as well. These kits are top-notch mate...Tamiya quality. They have several 'lines' of kits. Their 'Weekend Edition' kits are quite simple and easy to bang together...the theory is that one can be built in a weekend (no s**t!). They also have a 'Dual Combo' range which is two complete aircraft in the same box...very good value. They do limited runs and have a kind of 'Master' line too which are reputed to be among the best aircraft kits on the market. They come with a small book and other supplied 'research' I think. These kits are a whole new level...for the modeller who 'has everything' so to speak. Often, Eduard kits have 'express masks' which are pre-cut airbrushing masks for decals and stripes etc. Their range of WW1 aircraft is very comprehensive, especially in the 1/72 and 1/48 scales.

Re: Driil Bits Question

I've been seeing Eduard pop up, and usually with reverence. I've gathered the same interpretation, from what I've read. Interesting suff!

Re: Driil Bits Question

I won an Eduard kit of a Fokker E IV. at the club raffle. Unfortunately, it's 1/72 so not my usual scale. Opening the box (and sniffing it), I was pleased to find that somebody had put a Fokker Dr. 1 kit in with it too. They look great. The Fokker E IV was the aircraft Max Immelmann died in.

Re: Driil Bits Question

Wasn't it in a Fokker E.III that the Eagle of Lille died in?

Quite possibly mate. I was quoting a modelling site and not a history site.

Nice smiley huh?
